Words early in your list of "words to search for" are weighted more heavily. Common words like 'and' are excluded from the index, and will not return any matches. When sorting by date, some items may be up to a day out of order due to time zone differences.
Searches NNTP "overview" fields: Subject, From, Date (and a few other less useful ones). Dates are in "DD Mon YYYY" format, e.g., "1 May 2003". Some posts have a leading 0 on single-digit dates (e.g., "01 May 2003"); others do not. The search is not case sensitive. If you enter several words they will only match if the same exact 'phrase' appears in the news headers.
Each post to a given group is assigned a unique number within that group. If you know the post's item number, you can retrieve it above.
The subjects of the 30 posts ending with the one you specify will be displayed. (Blank = most recent).
